Website accessibility.

We aim to ensure that this website can be used as effectively and easily as possible by all users.

We are working with the RNIB to audit the site and have made changes based on their recommendations.

Our site aims to meet WAI level 2 (AA) accessibility guidelines, and we run monthly tests to check for any areas where we might be failing to reach these standards. All new content that is added is tested against this standard as it is added to the site.

We are aware that small parts of the site including some forms and the online mapping pages currently do not pass the AA standards. We are working to correct this.  Some links to external sites may open in a new window without a warning, we will also work to correct this over the coming months as the site develops.

The Web Accessibility Initiative website has more information on accessibility guidelines.

The website is designed to be used by all browsers. If you are having problems using a specific browser, please contact us at webmanager@cornwall.gov.uk.

Speech enabling software

We will shortly be adding speech enabling software to the website.  This means that if you have problems reading the content of the site, you will be able to use this software to have the pages read to you aloud.

Useful tools

Blind and partially sighted users can obtain information on viewing pdf documents by visiting the Adobe access website.

PDF documents can be converted back into webpages (HTML) or text, by using the Adobe web based conversion tool. Please note this may not work for all PDF documents, depending on their content.

A Microsoft Word document viewer can be downloaded if you do not have Microsoft Word on your computer.

The abilitynet website explains the many ways you can change your browser, computer, keyboard and mouse settings to make the web more accessible for you.

The My Web My Way pages on the BBC website have some useful information about accessing websites.

Changing text size

You can alter the text size by choosing the 'view' in the browser menu:

  • Internet Explorer: View - Text Size - alter as required.
  • Firefox: View - Zoom - alter as required
  • Opera: View - Zoom - alter as required.

You can also alter the colours used on webpages:

  • Internet Explorer: - tools - internet options - colours
  • Firefox: tools - options - content - colours
  • Opera: tools - preferences - web pages

Plain English

We follow Plain English guidelines to try and make the content of the website as clear as possible, however sometimes jargon may be unavoidable.

Editorial Control

By using a content management system, we have enabled all departments of the council to maintain their own areas of the website. However all content is checked for technical, Plain English and other aspects before it goes 'live' onto the website.

If you have had any problems at all using our website for any reason, please contact us and let us know.  We will then look into the problem and try to make the necessary changes.
