A Fairtrade City

Fairtrade City

March saw FairTrade Fortnight in Truro, marked by a presentation ceremony held at the Town Hall. This was also a chance for the city to celebrate its award of ‘FairTrade City’ status, which singles it out as a city with many businesses selling FairTrade products. This was also an opportunity to further promote and celebrate the FairTrade ethos.

Truro City Council took up the challenge of the Make Poverty History campaign – passing a resolution two years ago supporting the principle of fair trade. The Council also agreed to use FairTrade products at its functions, and was instrumental in the setting up of the Truro FairTrade Group. This group includes councillors, retailers, church leaders, a member of the Cornwall Green Party and the Chamber of Commerce.

A year later the campaign to gain FairTrade status was successful, and the group is now actively encouraging even more traders to sell FairTrade products of all kinds. Over the past few months the group has prompted numerous organisations and businesses to stock FairTrade products such as coffee, tea, chocolate, sugar, fruit and crafts.

Goods are labelled FairTrade to show that farmers and growers from developing countries have been able to sell those products at a fair price, helping them to meet their families’ health and education needs, as well as care for the land in a sustainable way.
