Truro Historical Project

Throughout the second half of 2007, Truro City Council developed it plans for the Truro Historical Project – a volunteer initiative to research and present a history of Truro.

During the development stage, we sought your views about the project through this website, printed media and at a public meeting held in August 2007. We thank you for your contributions, all of which helped shaped our plans for the project.

The City Council is now delighted to announce that it has received a grant of over £150,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, meaning that work can start on the project immediately.

The project has two distinct but related phases – research and engagement. The research phase will begin with the appointment of a Project Leader and the recruitment of up to 20 volunteers.

The volunteers will receive training to help them undertake research at locations such as the Cornwall Record Office, Courtney Library and Cornwall Centre. The project will therefore deliver benefits by increasing people’s skills and by working in partnership with Cornish archives.

The second phase of the project, beginning July 2009, will be to translate the findings of the research into various engaging formats, such as:

  • Resources for schools, helping pupils make the transition from primary to secondary school
  • A brand new exhibition of Truro’s history, particularly its government, to be held in the City Council foyer
  • A new website, detailing all the findings and providing opportunities for people to discover more about Cornwall’s capital
  • The City of Lights parade 2009, which will take the history of Truro as its theme
  • Printed material providing further information about Truro’s history which could be of use to local government, business, students and cultural organisations

It is hoped that as many people as possible will get involved with the project either as volunteers, or by experiencing one or more of the exciting forms of interpretation.

For more information about the project, including volunteering opportunities, please contact the City Council on 01872 274766
